When we told our parents we were relocating to the Boston, MA area after we got married, they went ballistic.

He told them they could continue to complain about where we were moving, but we were moving, and they had to get used to the idea. They all knew they had the option to come stay anytime they wished. A part of me wished we had issued a blanket invitation, because I was sure my brother and his sister would be here the entire time they were out of school.

I booked the hotel because it was far enough away from Sea World, Orlando, FL that it was cheaper. Once we got to Lakeland, FL, we were looking at all the things to do in the area. There were several natural habitats like Lake Mirror and Lake Morton. There was an adventurous scavenger hunt which meant you had to walk around the city and find different clues that would lead you to your destination. Along with this, there was also a Safari Wilderness that left my sons wanting to go there before we went to SeaWorld, Orlando. Although we had tickets for SeaWorld, we could use them any time. We spent a full week investigating all there was to see in Lakeland, FL. Even though it was hot and we were grateful to have the air conditioning in the room, we were still thrilled to have found all the fun and interesting things you could do in Lakeland, FL. Honestly, we took a full week before moving on to our next destination. Only one day was spent inside, and that was because of the heat and humidity, but we still found things to do. Their restaurants are fantastic, in Lakeland, and we plan to have a destination vacation next year, where we go to Lakeland, FL to see what else we can discover.

I felt like I was going back in time when I got to Elgin, IL.

My best friend told me I was going to love Charles Dickens, A Tale with a Twist, since I was a lit major.

I had to be honest and told her I wasn’t really into listening to people read, but she told me it was different. She said it was a little ways outside of Elgin, but she was sure I would enjoy it. I was more interested in seeing the lights and hearing the sounds of the city, but she didn’t want to hear it. She was back from school and wanted to relax the way she wanted to relax. I thought since I was the visitor, I should get to do something I wanted to do, but she wasn’t listening to it. It was cold that night, and the HVAC in her car had gone out. I was ready to turn around and go back to the house, but she was driving. When we got to the place where the reading was going on, I saw the reader’s picture. He was done up to look like Charles Dickens. I couldn’t believe how the cadence of his voice drew me in, and I almost jumped when I heard him speak for the ghost of Christmas future. I felt a chill go up my spine that had nothing to do with the lack of heating. It was the perfect setting for the perfect story at Christmas time. My friend admitted she was bored when we left, but I had to admit I was thrilled to have experienced Charles Dickens, A Tale With a Twist.

• Every year, the Magic tree is lit up at Christmas time.

It sits in the intersection of two busy highways, and it has been a community staple for decades. It has been a place for people to visit and a spot to drop off toy donations for the Operation Toy Soldier nonprofit. In recent years, it has become the perfect backdrop for Christmas selfies by both natives of Lee’s Summit and tourists. Not being a native resident of Lee’s Summit, I knew very little about the Magic Tree. My best friend talked about the Magic tree from Thanksgiving until Christmas holiday. She couldn’t wait to go back to Lee’s Summit for the holidays this year, and she asked me to go with her. Normally, I would be going south with my parents, and enjoying warmer weather, the pool, and air conditioning. They had decided to go visit Aunt Linda in London, and I didn’t want to go along. I agreed to go with her, as long as her parents thought it was okay. When we got there, I was glad I had brought my heavy winter coat and gloves. It was warm on the airplane, but it was frigid as we walked across the tarmac. As soon as the heating in the airport hit, I was beginning to thaw. The HVAC system in the taxi was even better, but it wasn’t until we got to my friend’s house that I felt comfortable. The temperature was thirty-two, and without the furnace, I would have frozen. Even with the cold, it was still the best Christmas I had in years.

One of the few places I had never visited while in Florida, was the Jacksonville zoo. My daughter told me it wasn’t the biggest zoo, but it would be fun for the girls, so we headed out. I was used to our zoo back where I lived. There were places all over the zoo where you could get under shade and it would be a lot cooler. Jacksonville zoo had a lot of shaded areas, but it didn’t help to escape the heat and humidity of summer. I felt like I was going to get sick from the heat, but I wasn’t going to tell my daughter that. It was getting close to lunch time, and I simply said I needed to get some lunch. She started toward an area where you could hotdogs, hamburgers and other things, and I was sure she was going to suggest we eat at one of the picnic tables. I grabbed my granddaughter’s hand and pointed to the small restaurant where she could watch the animals while we ate. It advertised air conditioning on the window, and I already knew I was going to sit inside while we ate. We hadn’t even finished our lunch when my youngest granddaughter yawned. She said she was tired and asked if we could go back to my daughter’s house. I couldn’t tell her no. She was only six and needed to get out of the heat and humidity at Jacksonville Zoo. My daughter wasn’t happy, but I was the one who paid the entrance fee for all of us, and I paid for lunch. All she had to do was drive us to the zoo and back to her house.
