There are a ton of people living in The Villages.

The Villages is a community that is more than 30,000 acres. More than 100,000 people live in The Villages. It is easily the largest retirement community in central Florida. The Villages is very unique, because it was specifically designed to cater to retired folks. There is a focus on making sure that there are plenty of social and recreational activities and easy access to all of the shops and stores. The Villages has more than 50 different golf courses. Many of them have been designed by famous golf course architects. I had a job at one of those golf courses last week. I work for a heat pump and AC repair business in The Villages. We offer same day and 24-hour emergency services. A customer in The Villages called me to fix the AC unit at the clubhouse in the golf course. This was my first time going to the golf course to help with a heat pump or AC repair. I received two free tickets to play golf at the course when I was done with the repair. I didn’t expect to receive the tickets, and I was very shocked and surprised. The value of the tickets was probably $200. I don’t play a lot of golf, but there were definitely a bunch of people at the AC repair business that were interested in taking the tickets off my hands. I told the guys that I was going to wait to see if my dad wanted them and if not I would put everyone’s name in a hat and give them away.

Some of my favorite attractions in Birmingham include the Birmingham Zoo, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, just to name a few.

But my all-time favorite place to go is to the McWane Science Center. It’s 3 attractions in one and they include an interactive science museum, aquarium, and IMAX Dome Theater. And best of all, my kids love it as well. It’s a venue that is indoors and it’s also climate controlled, which means we can visit all year long. Over the last few years, the weather in Birmingham has been changing. The Summers have been getting hotter and hotter with the temperatures averaging above 90 degrees for July and August. And combined with high levels of humidity, I refuse to be outside. We have also seen some really cold Winters as well, which makes it hard to play outdoors. But I want to make sure that my kids are entertained, so I find different attractions around town that have heating as well as air conditioning. So, whether it’s extremely hot outside, raining or it’s brutally cold, we can visit these places with no issues because I know the venues have climate control. I also like taking the kids to the zoo, but of course, it’s mostly outdoors with only a few spaces to find respite from the heat or cold. The crazy part about this is my kids could care less about the attractions having climate control. All they really care about is that the places have fun activities that can keep them entertained. Perhaps I am choosing these attractions because of my preferences not theirs.

I’ve spent nearly my entire adult life in regions where the lifestyle that we take for granted would be a dream come true.

I spent all that time in those parts of the world to try and help them develop sustainable economies.

But I wasn’t doing it from some skyscraper with zone controlled air conditioning. No, I was in places where even the government buildings didn’t have what we would consider modern commercial HVAC. Most of the time, if there was any cooling, it came from an evaporative cooler. And that might reduce the temperature of the air a bit and provide some cooling comfort. Yet, it did nothing about the humidity like the heat pumps in most places where I now call home, which is Evansville IN. I’m back in the States now and I’m here for good. 30 years is long enough when it comes to that sort of work. While I’m not retiring, I’m going into more of an academic atmosphere to help the next generation do this kind of work. One thing that I’m still getting accustomed to is all this over air conditioning. Sure, it’s hot and humid in Evansville IN where I live now. But it’s nothing compared to other places I’ve lived. And yet, I hear the heat pumps kick on with air conditioning if the temperature gets about 75 degrees. The air conditioning is one of many culture shocks that I’m trying my best to adjust to dealing with. But it sure hasn’t been easy. People who visit me at my Indiana are always asking me for more air conditioning. And we haven’t even gotten to the Summer months yet.

 

Getting accustomed to air conditioning in Indiana

In Illinois you need to be ready for winter.

AC you can take or leave it. Heating is the biggest priority in our area. In Glenview, it is impossible to get heating service or a repair job in the winter season. You need to think ahead and get it taken care of in the fall. Then you need to ensure your heater works great for the reminder of the long, brutal cold season. I have a hydronic heating system. A boiler is in my basement and piping is stretched throughout the floorboards. I recently upgraded and got the pipes to stretch to my driveway. I now have a snowmelt system. I see my neighbors shoveling and plowing almost daily in the winter. Having a snowmelt system means I can just walk outside and be on my pavement. I then turn the key and drive away. I don’t need to warm up my car or chip away ice since it sits in the radiant heat. I don’t need to set an alarm earlier in the winter due to snowtime prep. It was more than worth the money. I feel like a salesperson for our Glenview HVAC dealer. Anyone I talk to I mention my snowmelt system. It is just too good and perfect for our area. If you live where it is snowy and cold most of the year, like it is in IL, then you need a snowmelt system. In order to have it though, you need to spring for the boiler system. I am really glad that I did.

If you happen to travel or stay in Minneapolis during winter, get ready to spend lots of time indoors.

Why? This is because winter in this part of the country is brutal, and the temperatures do reach below freezing. So, this makes being outside a less than appealing thing for people in the area to do. This is the time the heating systems come on, and folks prefer enjoying some hot chocolate around the fire. Still, being inside doesn’t mean you get bored because there are many ways you can remain entertained. Perhaps this is the time to catch up on that series that you’ve always planned to watch. Also, the kids can come out of the house briefly to play in the snow on a calm day when the temperatures are not frigid. There are places you can also visit during winter in Minneapolis and have tons of fun. Though the weather won’t encourage many people to go on adventures, you can pick a nice day for some winter hiking, and ice skating on the frozen lakes. Check out other places like bars and restaurants that are open during this season, and enjoy local delicacies as well as international cuisines. Some festivals and celebrations do happen during winter so keep that in mind as you look for things to see and do in Minneapolis, MA. The downtown area never disappoints and always has events taking place no matter the season.
