In retrospect, it’s amazing that the old panel van lasted for as long as it did.

When I bought the van from my Uncle Pete it was already ten years old.

Pete had taken good care of it, so it ran well, but it didn’t have too many good years left in it. I drove that big van everywhere, and when things went sour with my parents I turned it into my home. It was big enough to sleep in, and got me away from their house. This turned out to be a bad idea, because although the city of Philadelphia, PA is enormous, it’s darn near impossible to find a long term parking spot. Once the Philadelphia cops find out you are living in your vehicle they will make sure you can’t park anywhere for more than a few hours. After the third time the Philadelphia cops made me move from under a bridge, I was getting tired of it. I found an RV park on the outskirts of Philly that let me park and sleep there at night. This was a stroke of luck, because it’s also where I met the owner of a cannabis dispensary who offered me a job. At this point cannabis had just been legalized, and new dispensaries were popping up all around Philadelphia. This guy needed workers, and I needed money, so it was a match made in heaven. I stayed in Philadelphia and worked at the cannabis dispensary for six months, then I paid to fix the van and hit the road to find a new home.

Every day, we use all these appliances in our homes, but have you ever thought about the history of them? Even better, can you imagine what life would be if we didn’t have these luxury appliances and machines that we use every day.

For instance, most of us have some form of HVAC system or use air conditioning and heating to remain comfortable in our homes.

But have you ever thought about life without a heating or cooling system? Some people have fireplaces and that could be used as an alternative to heating. I live in Buffalo NY, and we have a fireplace inside my house, and I also have an HVAC system that includes a furnace as well as an air conditioning unit. And although we have a fireplace, to be honest, we barely use it because we depend on our furnace to keep our home comfortable in the Winter. And frankly, I can’t imagine life without my furnace. I can easily activate my furnace using my thermostat, but with a fireplace, it requires so much more than that. Between the firewood, the cleaning, the starter wood, and checking the damper, there are so many things that have to be considered when using a fireplace. I am glad that I have these modern conveniences in my home because I don’t think I would like to live a life without an HVAC unit. We take many of these modern appliances for granted but without them, we would be spending more time cooking, cleaning, and trying to keep our home as comfortable as possible in between all of that. Life is so much better with these luxury items.

One of my favorite things to do when vacationing is go to the wineries and breweries. This is one thing that drew my husband and I to each other. We planned most of our vacations around touring breweries and wineries. We didn’t need to worry if it was going to be too hot, or rainy. Most of the time we were inside. This year, our destination is Hillsboro, OR. We read the average high is only in the low to mid eighties, and it sounded like the perfect palace to check out some wineries. The first place my husband wanted to visit was the SteepleJack Pizza & Beer pub. Their original pub was in an over 100 year old church in Portland, ORs Sullivan Gulch neighborhood. They are now in a production facility, but they have a wide range of ales and lagers. I wanted to visit Oak Knoll Winery, Blizzard Wines, and Ruby Vineyard and Winery. He told me to choose one, but I wasn’t sure. Blizzard Wines is open all year round, and offers tours, but so does Oak Knoll winery. They offer guided tours and have a wine tasting room. Ruby Vineyard and Winery was a bit more refined than the other two, but it was still a lot of fun. I wanted to go to all three so badly that I begged him to change his mind. He told me we could take the tours, as long as it wasn’t raining, but he loved wine as much as I did. We had an amazing time visiting the wineries and breweries while in Hillsboro, OR, and I came home with several cases of wine from each winery..

I’m not complaining, but I wasn’t happy when my best friend told me she found the most amazing escape room, and I had to go with her.

I didn’t want to go into an escape room, and traveling almost 100 miles to visit one was not on my agenda.

It was almost Christmas, and I had a lot of shopping to do and gifts to wrap. She was really insistent and told me we could visit her brother while in Waldorf, MD. We left home and headed to Waldorf, MD, just a week before Christmas. I was 45 degrees when we arrived on Monday afternoon. I was shivering after having the heat on in the car for the last three hours. We stepped out of the car and ran into Mary’s brother’s house. He greeted us warmly, but it was the warmth of the HVAC system that I was craving. I couldn’t believe I was going to allow her to take me to an escape room this close to Christmas. I was already in Waldorf, MD, and we weren’t leaving for two days. BIshop, Mary’s brother, told me I would have a blast at the R & H Escape room. Instead of actually walking, everything is virtual reality. We would work as a team, but we would wear headsets. He asked if I wanted a zombie adventure, jailbreak, or something tame, like an Egyptian experience. I really wanted to go home, but I chose the jail break. By the end of the night, we had done every VR escape room, and had a blast. I was actually glad to have gone with my friend. It was warm inside, and I didn’t need to face the falling temperatures outside.

It’s only about a 90-minute drive from the place where we live now

My neighbor and I have lived next to each other for the past 3 years. Recently she told me that she is going to be moving to Tampa. I’m really surprised to find out that she is going to move. She has lived in the neighborhood for much longer than I have and I thought she was happy here. We talked a couple of days ago about her move and she told me that one of the biggest reasons she was moving was due to money. A Tampa air conditioner repair business offered her $3 more an hour and she gets medical and dental benefits at the new job. The air conditioner repair business where she was working did not offer any benefits at all. Maybe the reason is due to the small town area, but Tampa is a much larger city. My neighbor is really excited about the changes. She thinks Tampa is going to be a lot more fun and I agree. There’s about a thousand things to do in Tampa at night, and here in our small town there’s a redneck karaoke bar and that’s it. I told her that I would be more than happy to help her move. I have a box truck that I use for work and I could easily help her move down to Tampa. I can fit a lot of boxes in the back of the 19ft trailer. It’s only about a 90-minute drive from the place where we live now. I could meet some people in Tampa and maybe go visit my neighbor after she gets settled.
