I decided to take the kids to church on Easter because we haven’t been to church in about 5 weeks. My husband and I had a lot going on with work, and he has been traveling a lot more than usual. So, our Sundays have become the days where we have been relaxing and preparing for the week ahead. I like going to church, but I must admit that these past weeks have been great because I was able to use my Sundays in an efficient way. Anyway, for Easter, we all got dressed and went to church thinking it would be a great service. However, when we got to church, we discovered that the HVAC unit broke down the night before. There were some members in the church building but unfortunately, church was canceled for the day. It would’ve been uncomfortable having service inside the building with no air conditioning. Plus, the weather was warm on Easter Sunday. In fact, it was the first day of the year where the temperature got into the 90s. Having air conditioning in Phoenix is a must, especially since the average temperature for April is about 85 degrees. And of course, that average temperature increases the closer we get to Summer where the average temperature can rise up to 3 digits. Anyway, after we discovered that church was canceled due to the broken air conditioning, we took the kids to breakfast and then we treated them to ice cream afterwards. Then we went back home to our comfortable air conditioning because the day got pretty hot.

I like to tackle a thorough cleaning of my house during the middle of winter.

In the middle of January, the temperature in Lee’s Summit is typically in the teens. Because of the freezing cold weather and snow, I am typically kept inside for six straight months. It’s the perfect opportunity to move furniture around, empty cupboards, organize closets and launder all of the linens. I scrub the tubs, toilets, baseboards and even the light fixtures. There is a nearly endless selection of options, with all different styles, sizes and prices available. I was able to match the decor of the specific rooms and install the new fixtures myself. In the winter, the fans rotate clockwise to create an updraft and circulate warm air more evenly throughout the room. I reverse fan direction in the summer to provide a downdraft that creates a cooling effect. The fans are improving comfort and saving me money on my heating bills.

The summers in Birmingham are long, hot and humid.

We expect temperatures in the mid nineties and typically run the air conditioner for at least six months.

Unfortunately, the cooling system isn’t sufficient to provide ideal comfort. The excessive amount of moisture in the air makes the house feel hot and muggy. It can be tempting to lower the thermostat setting. I’ve learned that this just forces the air conditioner to run more often without solving the problem. Monthly costs go up because the system is using more energy. There is a greater risk of malfunction, and the air conditioner won’t last as long. My friends and I live on the west side, and the beach in Jacksonville is about 45 minutes away.

I don’t go to the beach every day because I hate to drive. There’s usually traffic and it’s hard to find a place to park.
