When I decided to add an addition onto our Lowell, Massachusetts home there were a lot of choices to make.

I knew I wanted the area to serve as my office.

I wanted a lot of windows and plenty of space to stretch out. I also needed an attached bathroom. I debated on linking to the existing ductwork of the house. I then realized my current HVAC unit would have needed to be updated to a larger one. I didn’t want to get into that big expense. I also don’t use my office all day long, everyday. It made sense to do a small HVAC unit just for the office and bathroom. For heating I had heated flooring put down. Underneath the office carpet and bathroom penny tile there are electric heated mats. They keep the floor warm all winter long. When your feet feel warm, the body feels warm as a result. I can lower the temperature in the office because it feels so toasty. For AC I am able to get by with just a portable unit that plugs into the wall. The air conditioner does a great job and I only run it when I am in the room. So for a few hours five days a week in the Lowell summers. It makes for a small energy bill and does not affect the rest of the house. The addition itself was pretty pricey. It is nice that I was able to save quite a bit of money on heating and cooling. I really like how everything turned on. My current HVAC equipment works just perfectly for my Lowell, MA area.

When Don told me we would be heading to Fort Collins in Colorado, I was excited.

• For months, I had been telling him we needed to take a break from work and travel.

This was once our favorite pastime when we got together. In fact, Don and I met on the road when we had both gone hiking. We soon became friends, and things progressed when we realized we lived in the same area. However, life has changed, and it’s been 5 years of total chaos in our household. This is why this trip to Fort Collins made me so excited. I had told him about this amazing city situated in northern Colorado. Not many people know this, but this is a place full of so much history and historical places to visit. I once read an article by a travel blogger detailing her experience traveling to Fort Collins one summer and I immediately added it to my bucket list. When Don said we would do something this summer, I told him about what I had read and sent him a link so he’s also read up on it. Well, I think he did and began to plan a surprise for me because he knew we had to take a break from work, the kids, and all that our lives demanded. Since it’s summer, Don made sure to rent out an airbnb with an air conditioner to keep us cool and comfy. Though it was hot, we had a great time, and I particularly enjoyed this outdoor concert one summer evening during our trip.

I relied on comic books and cannabis to keep me sane. How I made it through my traumatic high school years I will never know. That was a long time ago, and my life has totally turned around. One thing that never changed was that reading comics and getting high was my “safe place.” Whenever I get stressed out with life, this is how I recharge my batteries. Now that you understand my personal history, you will understand how stoked I am to open my own business here in Denver, Colorado. I am running the first business in Denver that combines a comic book shop and a cannabis dispensary under one roof. I’m actually surprised to be the first business of this kind, because there are hundreds of cannabis outlets in the Denver metropolitan area. I did find a radical feminist bookstore that also sold cannabis, but I am going for a much different vibe. No politics, no sports, no loud music, just killer cannabis and the best comic book collection in the city of Denver, and maybe the state of Colorado. I have thousands of comics out for people to read, with new issues coming every month. So far business is soft, mostly because the competition for cannabis sales in Denver is monstrous. I need to be patient, because I know there is a demand in Denver for this kind of establishment.

When we first started going there, it was long before there was legalized cannabis in the state of Michigan.

Once a year, every year, my wife and I drive to Muskegon and rent the same hotel room. It’s a romantic gesture, harkening back to our younger days when we had to sneak around to be together. It was a Romeo and Juliet type of situation, where Jane’s parents were devoutly religious, and her dad was also a police officer. My folks were degenerates, who often got in trouble with the law. Jane was forbidden to date me. One night we managed to sneak away for a while, and spent a weekend in a small hotel room just outside of Muskegon. It was one of the best nights of my life. I am proud to say that Jane and I are still happy and in love after 15 years, and we always look forward to going back to Muskegon. When we first started going there, it was long before there was legalized cannabis in the state of Michigan. Things have changed a lot since then, and now a normal part of our Muskegon anniversary trip is to stop by the local cannabis dispensary. I don’t know what they put in the soil around here, but the local Muskegon cannabis crops are among the best I have ever smoked. Jane and I don’t go to Muskegon for cannabis, but we always make sure to stock up on weed whenever we visit! This year we are planning to spend a few extra days in Muskegon, so that we can be there for the big annual sailboat regatta featuring classic ships from 200 years ago.

This week on my podcast I spent over an hour talking about Lowell, Michigan. As you already know, every episode of my show centers on a different city or region. I don’t just sample their local cannabis, I dig deep into the history of the place and its strains. My recording studio is in the back of my RV, and I drive from town to town drinking in the local culture. Even as I made my first pass of driving through Lowell, I was struck by its winsome charm. The historic district is a delight for the senses, with pretty buildings, clean streets, and nice people. I drove right to the first cannabis dispensary I found, and started digging into the history of Lowell. Budtenders are more than just wage-slaves filling your orders, they are smart, educated people who know a lot about local cannabis. This was definitely true in Lowell, where everyone was so friendly. This marks my 80th episode of the cannabis review show, and without a doubt Lowell is the nicest place I have visited yet. Lowell may not be the biggest city in the world, but it has a chill small-town vibe, while also stocking the finest cannabis in the state of Michigan.
