Everyone around here supports the home team. If you happen to be a Packers fan, you should run for your life. The city is extremely busy during football season, especially when there is a home game. My wife got me tickets to a game a couple of months ago. My friends and I went to the game and the Vikings won by a score of 42 to 7. The other team only just scored once and it was on defense. The team could not seem to move the ball effectively up and down the field. I didn’t mind seeing the other team lose. After all, I wanted my Vikings to win the game. My wife didn’t call me at all while I was at the game, even when there was a serious issue with the heating system. When I got home from the game, temperatures inside of the house were a cool and chilly 55°. My wife was in the bedroom with the space heater running. It was a lot warmer in the bedroom than the rest of the house. My wife explained that the furnace had been off for several hours. There are endless books and resources about the state, and for good reason, but I always pay more attention to my hometown. For several years my mother was a reporter for the Lowell newspaper, mostly covering local stories about prominent citizens. This means that I am well-known and well-liked around Lowell, just because my mother was so beloved up until she died. Maybe it’s not a bad thing, because she loved her job at the Lowell newspaper, which is now out of business. One thing I find fascinating about this place is how the population of Lowell has fallen and risen over the years. Lowell has been in existence since about 1830, when it started with a few thousand residents. It grew steadily for a hundred years, before an industry collapse caused a mass exodus. After that, Lowell started growing again, rebuilding for the next 100 years, until today it is bigger than ever. This is great new for me, because I run a small HVAC repair service, so all the new arrivals to Lowell means more business for me! Although I love learning about the history of Lowell, I am not a writer like Mom was, I am a humble HVAC tech who likes to read. The Elgin Academy is one of the oldest and most revered institutions in America, and for generations it has schooled the best and the brightest this country has to offer. I know a lot about local history, but I never attended the Elgin Academy. Who could afford it? I come from a blue collar family, so while I love to read and fill my mind with knowledge, I will always be an HVAC tech. This is what my family does, historically speaking, so it behooves me to be enthusiastic about the family business. Over the last 30 years we have become the most successful heating and cooling company in Elgin. I am fascinated by the Elgin Academy and its proven record of success, but it doesn’t have anything to offer me. One day I will be running this HVAC company, so maybe I can retire early and enroll in the Elgin Academy as a senior citizen! Every member of my family that has run this HVAC company has moved away from Elgin as soon as they retired. And every subsequent member retires a little bit earlier. I want to follow in those footsteps, and move from Elgin to someplace on a tropical island, and I want to do it as quickly as possible. I love Elgin, and I am good at HVAC work, but I would rather sit on the beach and read books.
