My mother came into the house the other day, and she was upset about smelling marijuana.

She knew I used marijuana, and I had been using it since I was a teenager. I had depression and the legalization of marijuana gave me the ability to use marijuana as a natural medication. My mom still didn’t like the idea of me using marijuana, but I hadn’t had a manic episode for three years. When she realized how much marijuana I had in the house, she freaked. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, and I didn’t have a huge amount of marijuana, but more than my mother thought I should have. I told her that if she didn’t like how much marijuana I used or had in the house; she didn’t need to visit. I knew I hurt her feelings, but every time she comes to my house, I get a reprimand about using medical marijuana. The funny part about me using medical marijuana is that she was the one who took me to the doctor to get it. I just don’t understand why she gets so anxious about my marijuana use when she was the agreed with my doctor for it to be part of my depression arsenal.

There was a parade and festival in downtown Denver last week and I was stuck working at the marijuana dispensary. It was really a pain, because there were so many events going on at the same time. Traffic was moving in lots of different directions and the interstate was backed up. I left the Denver marijuana dispensary around noon with the first of my deliveries. I headed east of Denver with the first order and I saw the traffic standing still going in the opposite direction. I took a different route home, but it didn’t help. When I saw traffic backed up on the interstate already, I knew it was going to be a very long day. Traffic never got better and I spent most of my night sitting in one place. I barely finished with two sets of deliveries and I usually end up with a fourth set on the weekends. I only earned half of the regular amount in tips that I usually make on a weekend night. Traffic was horrendous and it slowed down everything, including all of the marijuana deliveries. By the end of my shift, I was tired, sleepy, and exhausted. I didn’t have a wad of money in my pocket to show for my aches and pains and that made me even more upset at the end of the night. The next time there is going to be a festival, I’m going to request that day off work. I’d rather stay home than have to deal with marijuana deliveries in Denver in that kind of crazy traffic again.

It’s a little more difficult finding fun things to do in the winter. Living in Elgin, Illinois, the winter weather is brutal. The temperature is below freezing for at least half the year, and there’s plenty of snow on the ground. One thing that my whole family enjoys is getting on the ski slopes. There are plenty of ski resorts a short drive from Elgin. Skit trips make for an awesome weekend getaway. I make sure to keep in mind that the abilities of my kids vary quite a bit due to their ages. Especially if we haven’t been on our skis since last season, it’s important to start the younger kids on the beginner slopes. It helps all of us to get back in shape and gain confidence. It has proven worthwhile to enroll the kids in refresher lessons before we head off on a full-length ski trip. Even the older kids benefit from some instruction and tips. I then research to find a resort that has “bunny” hills as well as black-diamond courses, so that everyone can have a good time. There are several resorts within driving distance of Elgin that are kid-friendly. They often offer things like ski school, sleigh rides, bonfires with s’mores and activities beyond skiing the slopes. My kids like when there’s the chance to go tubing down the hills, snowmobile rentals and a game room. My husband and I appreciate it when our room includes a hot tub.

There is still a lot that we need to see along the Riverwalk

A few years ago, I moved to Tampa after receiving a promotion from my job. I work for a consulting firm and our main office is located in Tampa. And my new position required that I need to work from this location. Prior to moving to Tampa, I did some research on the city, and I absolutely fell in love with it. Over the last several years, the local government has made some drastic improvements. My husband and I fell in love with the city after seeing the Riverwalk and all the fun activities along the way. We loved that it’s a 2.6-mile trail that meanders along the river. Plus, we thought the kids would enjoy all the fun activities. The only thing that I was concerned about was if the trail was easily walkable when the weather was hot outside. And after walking the trail with the kids on a hot day, it was quite pleasant because of the cool breeze from the river. Additionally, we were able to take breaks and enter into some of the air conditioned places along the trail. One place that the kids loved was the Tampa Bay History Center. We stopped in during our first time at the Riverwalk and there was so much to do and see. I was happy that the museum had great air conditioning. It provided some much needed relief from the heat. But best of all, the museum was free for my kids. There is still a lot that we need to see along the Riverwalk. But I am glad that there are places that we can stop at along the trail that will have air conditioning as well as heating.

Two weeks ago, while I was driving down US1 in Cocoa, I decided to stop at this restaurant along the way.

• It’s called the Old Florida Grill & Oyster House, and I loved that it had all the things that make a great restaurant in Florida.

Live music, patio seating and water views, it doesn’t get any better than that. I was hoping to sit outside to enjoy my meal, but of course the weather decided to change at the last minute. It rains a lot in Florida during the Summer months, and most of the time, I plan my days around the rain. The rain normally falls anywhere between 2 and 4 p.m. So, I would make sure that I am indoors during those hours. At times, we do get lucky, and we avoid the rain. Anyway, on the day I stopped in at Old Florida Grill, it didn’t look like it was going to rain. So, I thought it was a perfect day to sit by the water. And boy was I wrong. I was seated on the patio for maybe 30 minutes before the skies became gray and dark. The clouds had moved in swiftly, and as a result, I had to move inside. While inside, I noticed how cold the air conditioner was. I do appreciate that the restaurant had great A/C because it Is important for business, especially in a state like Florida where it gets so hot outside. The great part about Cocoa is that after the rain the temperature drops like 10 to 15 degrees, so there will be no need for using the air conditioner as much.
