I never realized it snowed in Albuquerque, NM.

I had never heard of there being snow in the desert, but I didn’t consider all the mountains that surrounded Albuquerque.

When I found out we were being relocated to Albuquerque, NM, I read ‌about the climate and where it was located. I wanted to know where my new home was going to be, and what it was going to be like. Kirtland Air Force Base was an amazing sight to see, but I didn’t want to live there. My husband could live away from the air force base as long as he was available at a moment’s notice. We found a small home in Nob Hill that was a bit out of our price range, but it was perfect for our small family. The first winter we spent in Albuquerque, NM, was quite a shock to all of us. I read that Albuquerque was an arid area, and there was very little rain. Apparently, I hadn’t read all the articles. I knew we were going to need air conditioning and a way to add humidity to the house, but I didn’t realize how important it was to have heating. The other thing I had given no thought to was that it snowed. I had never heard of there being snow in the desert, but I didn’t consider all the mountains that surrounded Albuquerque. I had skimmed over an area that said there were less than 100 days that got precipitation, but I hadn’t thought about winter. Our first winter in Albuquerque, there was a snowstorm that almost brought traffic to a halt, and people panicked over their heating systems. My husband was an HVAC technician in the military, and he was out all day long. The snow was beautiful for us, but most of the people in our area acted like fish out of water.
