After a few weeks, Ed was able to attract enough new HVAC clients that he started paying me full-time
Evansville, Indiana is a hotbed for sports. Not major professional sports, but the true essence of athletics – amateur competition. This area has a lot more sports teams than you might expect, and the people of Evansville are rabid sporting fans. I actually moved here right after high school, in hopes of joining a minor league club and making my way into the majors. That never happened, but I had a lot of fun competing. One of my teammates on the club was a man named Ed, who ran a small HVAC repair company out of his van. Ed didn’t have a storefront, just his van and his tools, and he asked me to come work for him. I needed a job, because Evansville had no hostels and I was tired of living in a flop house with a bunch of drug addicts. At first Ed was only able to pay me for a few hours a week, but I kept showing up even when he couldn’t pay me. I wanted to learn HVAC repairs, and I wanted to be good at the job so I could start putting down roots in Evansville. If I wanted to live here for good I needed a reliable income, so I did my best to help Ed grow his little HVAC company into a reputable force in the Evansville community. After a few weeks, Ed was able to attract enough new HVAC clients that he started paying me full-time. Before long I’ll be able to afford my own apartment in Evansville, and move out of Ed’s basement.
