My dad was a history professor at Yale for eighteen years, before he finally settled down and started a family late in life. When I was born my dad was over 50 years old, which made for a heck of a generational gap! He did his best to build a strong bond with me, and one of the ways he did that was with local history. Lee’s Summit is an area awash in cultural and historical significance, and my dad would try to make it come alive for me. We would take nature walks in the woods outside of Lee’s Summit, and he would explain the events that occurred on that very ground. Dad passed away when I was a teenager, which is no great surprise, but I remember everything he taught me about Lee’s Summit. I did not follow in his footsteps, instead I became an HVAC technician. I enjoy reading and learning history, but HVAC work pays a lot better than being a teacher. Not only is the pay better, but I find HVAC work to be rewarding, because it involves problems that I can solve. When it comes to history, some things can never be solved. For example, did you know that there are still questions about why Lee’s Summit even has this name? Some people say it was named for Robert E. Lee, and other say that Lee’s Summit was named after a man named Dr. Pleasant Lea, and the town’s name is a misspelling! I prefer HVAC work because there are clear-cut problems that I can resolve to make my clients happy.
